What's It Worth?
Dear Don My father-in-law recently found these old pock-etknives in basement of a house he was raising. They have names on them that include Camillus, Barlow, Old Timer and Shrade. How old are these knives, and do they have any value as collect-ibles. Mary W. Centerpoint Dear Mary: My best guess is that these knives are no older the 60 years old and no newer than 40 years old. None of the brand stamps on them are highly sought after by collectors, even if they were in good condition. These knives are in poor condi-tion, meaning that entire lot is worth perhaps $10-15. Knife collecting, and especially pocketknives, is a popular hobby in Alabama. However, as is the case with all old collectibles from coins to firearms, condition and rarity largely determine value. Most collectors want nothing that is not in very good to excellent condition. The more uncommon the knife, the more highly sought after it is, and its price is accord-ingly higher. I do have words of caution re-garding buying new limited edition collectible knives. Even if they are made by another highly sought after brand such as Case, limited edition knives such as those honoring football coaches, race car drivers and such, rarely achieve value as a true collectible until they are at least 30 to 50 years old. It is far better to invest the same money in an older collectible pocketknife made by Tree Brand or Puma that is more likely to accrue value at a higher rate in a shorter period of time.
