Close Look: Coosa WMA
One of Alabama's newest public hunting areas is the Coosa WMA: Cahaba and Columbiana tracts in Coosa County. Purchased from Hancock Timber in October of 2007, it consists of 9,746 acres within the Weogufka and Hatchet Creek watersheds. Notable is the property's rare Mountain Longleaf stands that are interspersed by hardwood. Located within the Coosa WMA, one of Alabama's oldest public hunting areas, this almost 10,000 addition holds one of the last remaining populations of red-cockaded woodpeckers that is found outside of the National Forest system.
