McCarthy's Tea Room & Restaurant
Tea Room & Restaurant
Bethlehem, Penn.
BY BRENDA PORTER-ROCKWELL ocated on the very spot where in 1777 the Revolutionary War Gen. Marquis de Lafayette convalesced after a leg wound, McCarthy’s Tea Room & Restaurant today continues to invoke thoughts of yesteryear. Located on Main Street in historic downtown Bethlehem, Penn., the Irish tearoom’s Proprietor, Neville Gardner, modeled his modest nook after fond boyhood memories growing up in Northern Ireland. “When I bought this building 12 years ago and I walked upstairs, I knew then that it had all of the characteristics of a tearoom … all of the characteristics of some of my favorite teahouses back home in Northern Ireland and the British Isles,” explains Gardner. Patrons from far and wide instantly feel at home. His mother’s picture hangs behind the register. Photos of extended family and their handwritten recipes adorn walls and window alcoves. Patrons dine on solid wood tabletops, worn from years of good

use. Looking out on to the street is an entire wall of large windows that could’ve once been easily substituted for warehouse bay doors, fitting with Bethlehem’s past as a steel-making town. Gardner says they’ve served 20,000 customers in 12 years in the tea/restaurant business and 25 years in retail. “Many find us because of the tourism aspect from Historic Downtown Bethlehem, but others come from hours away to see [Donegal Square] or just to visit the tearoom,” says Gardner. “I hope that by the time they leave, they’ve enjoyed the whole experience.” And it’s this sense of comfort, of walking into your grandmother’s kitchen, that feeling of home with each visit that Gardner says he works hard to recreate for customers at McCarthy’s. “We offer many homemade baked goods and other foods that offer a sense of comfort,” he says. “These are the traditional recipes and foods that I grew up with.” Choosing from more than 50 varieties of tea hand-sourced
