SCAA elects new board
The Specialty Coffee Association of America elected five new members to its board of directors. They include:Willem Boot, Marty Curtis, Al Liu, Paul Thornton and Max Quirin. Willem Boot owns Boot Coffee Consulting and is a “Q” coffee cupping program trainer. He lives in Mill Valley, Calif. Marty Curtis is the founder of Combustion Systems Sales & Service, Inc., which rebuilds and enhances roasters. He and his wife, Rita, run RoZark Hills Coffee Roastery in Romance,Ark. He is also on the boards of directors of Hines Public Market, Coffee Canada, Ltd., Origins Organic Coffee and Vancouver Coffee Academy. Al Liu is the director of relationship development at Atlas Coffee Importers in Seattle. He sits on SCAA Sustainability and Governance committees and makes his home in Seattle, Wash. PaulThornton is roast master for Coffee Bean International and a member of the Roasters Guild and one of the founders of the Northwest Regional Roasters Group. He lives in Portland, Ore. Max Quirin is a member of the Guatemalan National Coffee Growers Association and SCAA’s International Relations Committee. He lives in Guatemala City, Guatemala. 2010 North American Tea Championship were announced at the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas, which concluded June 13. The contest included 13 categories; five open to food service and the other eight open to ready-to-drink teas. The best food service unflavored black tea award went to The Republic of Tea for its “The People’s Iced Tea.” The best RTD unflavored black was Adagio Tea’s “Anteadote Organic Black Tea.” The best food service unflavored green tea award went to Shangri-La Tea Company for its “Organic Sushi Green Iced Tea.” The same award in the RTD category went to ITO EN, Ltd. for its “Sencha Shot.” The best food service flavored black tea award went to S&D Coffee, Inc. for its “Mangrove Bay Raspberry Tea.” The winner of that award in the RTD category was China Mist Brands for its “China Mist Pure Organic.” Rishi Tea won the food service flavored green tea category with its “Citron Green.” New Leaf Brands won the same award in the RTD category for its “Green Tea with Mango.” The best food service herbal tea award went to Rishi Tea for its “Mint Rooibos.” The same award in the RTD category went to TeaGschwendner, Inc. for its “Iced Tea Pineapple.” The best RTD oolong award went to Adagio Teas’ “Anteadote Organic Oolong Tea.” The best RTD sweetened black award went to True Brew’s “Sweet Black

Use Foursquare to Turn Loyal Customers into Loyal Promoters!

Who’s the “mayor” of your coffee shop? If you don’t know, you’re not foursquare enough! Enhance your social media arsenal with foursquare, a geolocating and networking tool, to tap the power of loyal customers. Consider Blue Max Coffee in Forest Park, Ill. Twenty-nine of the shop’s customers have “checked in” a total of 92 times, which means those customers visited the shop and took the time to announce that fact to the world via foursquare. Not only did they tell people they were there, but many commented: “Absolutely get the scone...Always made fresh in their in-house bakery” wrote one.
