Destined to Drive

F
red Dunbar just didn’t fit into the factory workers lifestyle he was destined to live and decided to break free from standing in one spot doing the same mundane tasks day in and day out. Trying to decide what kind of job would be a good fit for him, Fred realized that driving a truck was the way to go. Fred’s career advancement began the day he left the factory and started driving a straight truck in 1964. He learned his trade hustling dry goods from loading dock to storefront all over his hometown of Jackson, SC. Little did he know, he was preparing himself for a lifelong career. After driving for several years and gaining an ample amount of experience, he took trucking to the next level and started learning to drive a tractor- trailer. By the time The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act was signed into law on October 27, 1986, Fred had made his move from general freight to tankers and had landed a position with O’Boyle Tank Lines. Fred made his decision to stick with tankers in a short period of time. “I immediately knew that I would never again waste my time backed into a loading dock. Once I made the change to tankers, I told my wife that I didn’t think I would ever fill out another application, and I never have.” Although O’Boyle Tank Lines changed hands several times over the years, Quality Carriers eventually took the company back under their wing and Fred couldn’t have been more pleased. Fred is domiciled out of the Augusta terminal and at age 71, he has semi-retired. “I’ve worked with a lot of good people over the years, but Tara Flemming is one of the best. We have worked together since 1988 and although she came into the business very green, she worked hard and learned the business. You can make a good life for yourself working for Quality Carriers. They hire good people, they are dedicated to your safety and they are way ahead of the game when it comes to technology.” Fred has experienced trucking in many aspects and learned many things driving. “Don’t get me wrong,” Fred explains. “I have
made a good living driving, but trucking has also provided me with a good education. You just won’t believe what all you can learn out there on the road, driving for a living.” A true lesson is when you experience the true meaning of the word quality. Quality of life, Quality of family, and when it comes to the greatest driving opportunity… Quality Carriers. Fred made a commitment to his job, his family, his community and most importantly, his marriage. This commitment has led him to a milestone coveted by many couples. Fred and Mildred celebrated their 51st Wedding Anniversary in June, 2010. Based in Tampa, Florida, Quality Carriers remains the largest and most technologically advanced bulk transportation company in North America. They maintain a fleet of over 7,500 stainless steel and customized trailers and 3,000 tractors, as well as a nationwide network of state of the art full-service terminals.
