Five Jesse h. Neal Certificates of Merit heroes, step forward Over the last year you've probably noticed the Knights of the Road addition to many editions of . It recognizes, in an illus-trated format by artist Don Lomax, the story of truckers who've often risked their lives to rescue others or to establish safe conditions in an emergency situation. Some of these heroes have been recog-nized by programs such as the Truckload Carriers Association's Highway Angel or Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's North America Highway Hero. Goodyear's prestigious program, which has recognized truckers since 1983, is accepting nominations through Nov. 30. The four final-ists are presented in March at the industry's largest trade event, the Mid-America Truck-ing Show. Besides coverage by and other trucking magazines, their stories are circulated in main-stream news media. I don't have to tell you how unfair-ly truckers are often presented in the media, or how bad your image is with many uninformed people. You can help counter this misinformation by nominating any deserving hero you're aware of. The incident must have occurred between Nov. 16, 2007, and Nov. 15, 2008, to qualify. The nominee must be a full-time truck driver who lives in the United States or Canada. To find more information on the program, as well as a nomination form, call (330) 796-8183 or visit www.goodyear.com and search for Highway Hero. Bold action last year by Bountiful, Utah, resident Richard Filiczkowski resulted in his rescue of an 8-year-old girl from a sinking car. His good deed earned him the 25th North American Highway Hero title this year.
