At the urging of the ATA and the Virginia Trucking Association, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell re-opened earlier this year the 19 safety rest areas closed by the Commonwealth’s previous administration as a cost-cutting strategy. Several other states are looking at closing safety rest areas to lower transportation costs. The ATA continues to work with the states to educate them on the important safety benefits safety rest areas provide for all motorists. Top-Paying Marten Transport Adds Hefty Layover Pay
Marten Transport, which has been certified by an independent transportation institute as a top paying carrier, has boosted its pay package even more by increasing its layover pay. “We don’t want our drivers to have to worry about a layover,” says Marten’s Director of Recruiting,Tim Norlin.“But when it’s necessary, Marten wants to ensure that our drivers are fairly compensated for their time.” Effective immediately, Marten is paying $100 per day for layovers, strengthening the company’s already industry-leading pay. Recently, the National Transportation Institute, which provides accurate and authoritative mission critical benchmarks to truckload carriers, recently completed its annual National Driver Wages Survey. Transport America Supports MS150 Bicycle Race
For the 16 th year in a row, Transport America Inc. was involved in the Minnesota MS 150 bicycle race, which took place June 12 and 13 and featured more than 3,000 riders. Transport America provided 19 tractors and trailers to transport bikes and supplies from the metro area (White Bear Lake) to the start of the ride (Proctor, MN). Company drivers volunteered their time to drive the trucks and two independent contractors donated both their time and equipment.
