Safety www.g3pub.com 2008 53 ATA ADOPTS SAFETY AGENDA by John Latta Most recommendations address driver performance T he American Trucking Asso-ciations' board of directors has adopted 18 recommendations aimed at reducing highway-related fatalities and injuries through im-proved safety performance of drivers, vehicles and motor carriers. The recommendations were among 23 items identified for consideration by ATA's Safety Task Force, which the group established earlier this year. On several occasions during fall's ATA's Management Conference & Ex-hibition in New Orleans, Bill Graves, ATA president and chief executive of-ficer, referred to the pending package of safety policy recommendations as one of three critical steps a three-legged stool as he calls it the truck-ing industry needed to take in order to show that it is deserving of greater consideration in upcoming federal legislation especially the reauthori-zation of the highway program. A majority of the 18 recommen-dations address the performance of drivers commercial and noncom-mercial and include support for: A policy on the use of noninte-grated technologies while the vehi-cle is in motion i.e., technologies that could distract drivers; Safety_G31208.indd 53 11/20/08 3:09:18 PM
