The economic storm reaches far beyond Wall Street. Manufacturers have reduced output. Construction projects are cancelled or delayed. Consumer spending is down too. For the trucking industry, the slow economy adds up to one thing: fewer loads of product to be hauled. Drivers are feeling the pinch with reduced miles, longer wait times, and lots of anxiety. Some drivers are sweating it out as they watch company after company park tractors, close their doors or file for bankruptcy protection from creditors. In the midst of the storm, Southern Cal Transport is bucking the industry trend. In 2008, the company's team division has grown by nearly a third; over 30 percent. The Intermodal division has also experienced rapid growth, more than tripling in size in less than a year. It's important to note that these gains were not accomplished through mergers and buyouts, but earned by building the driving team one driver, one tractor at a time. Strict adherence to a detailed business plan keeps Southern Cal profitable. Of course, adding trucks and drivers doesn't mean much without loads for those new drivers to haul. VP of Sales Fred Needham has increased and fine-tuned the Southern Cal Sales team, producing growth in freight opportunities that has kept pace with driver additions. Taking direct control of our own destiny, says Needham, is the key to surviving this economic crisis. We continue to pursue new business with a renewed sense of urgency, and we're working with existing customers to make sure we're taking advantage of every freight opportunity that complements our current lanes. Chief Operating Officer Phil DeSimone is quick to give credit for the company's success. Our growth is the result of the efforts of the entire Southern Cal team. Our Customer Service Reps, he adds, won't hesitate to contact an existing customer to locate a load for a driver in the area. And Fleet Managers work hand-in-hand with Load Planners to make sure drivers are running when they want to be and home when they need to be. With over five decades in the industry, company founder and president Ken Adams has seen good times and bad. Economic cycles are something every business lives with, he said. Everyone succeeds when conditions are good. It takes a strong business plan and sound leadership to achieve success when conditions are challenging. And we never forget that the organization exists by and for the driver. What does the future hold for Southern Cal drivers? According to DeSimone, We will be here. In today's economic conditions, that's a pretty good start. ggg-SC-dec-values-CSsprd.indd 1 Untitled-17 2 11/12/08 1:55:09 PM
