Since its mission is simple, to compact soil and gravel with weight and vibration, it lacks the more complicated mechanisms found in backhoes, bulldozers and wheel loaders. Basically all a single drum vibratory compactor needs to do is drive, turn and vibrate. And although it's a simple machine, a lot of iron and a stout diesel engine go into every one, pushing the price of the most popu-lar size class into six digits. But with good PMs you can amortize the cost of your single drum compac-tors over as much as 10 years, giv-ing you a lot of value over time. To fi nd out more about the own-ing and operating costs of single drum compactors we talked with Ricardo Perez at Dynapac. Perez suggested we use Dynapac's CA250 single drum soil compactor as an ew0110_O&O Cost.indd 33 12/18/09 3:19 PM
