hoosing the correct grease for your heavy equipment requires an understanding of the various types of grease and the differences between them. Here is an overview of grease characteristics and the choices available from your Caterpillar dealer: · Ambient Temperature -- Grease should be pumpable at the temperatures you work in, but it should not become too runny from the heat generated within a joint. Greases with synthetic bases usually pump more easily. · Load-Carrying Capability -- This is measured by a four-ball weld test and defines the extreme pressure properties of the grease. The higher the test score, the better. · Moly -- Molybdenum disulfide is an additive that enables grease to carry a high load. · Thickener -- Thickeners like lithium and aluminum help hold the grease in place. If the thickener type is listed as a complex, it withstands high operating temperatures. · NLGI Number -- This scale compares the consistency of grease. · Water Washout -- This percentage (the lower the better) indicates resistance to washout.
These characteristics can be combined in various ways. Your CatŪ dealer can help you choose among the following Cat greases: · Arctic PlatinumTM -- Synthetic grease with excellent pumpability for use in cold climates. Withstands temperatures down to 70 F . · Desert GoldTM -- Synthetic grease with superior lubricating properties up to 450 F . · Ultra 5 Moly -- Versatile, petroleum-based grease with 5 percent moly, offering high load-carrying capability and high resistance to washout. · Advanced 3 Moly -- A lithiumcomplex grease for applications without extremes in temperature or moisture. · Multipurpose -- Contains no moly. Used for general applications like automotive needs. · White Lithium Complex -- For assembly applications. · High-Speed Ball Bearing -- Excellent lubrication over a wide temperature range for ball and roller bearings.
