ichard Woods knows that when his customers call for help with erosion control problems, his company, Con-Site Services Inc. of Calera, Ala., must respond quickly. "Erosion control issues can't be put off. If there's a problem, it has to be taken care of fast, or our customers will be fined by the EPA or the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. Those agencies are constantly monitoring jobsites, watching for problems with storm water management and pollution controls. "So we need to be able to respond. That requires knowing the ins and outs of the work, and having enough equipment to do the job, even when things get busy, Woods says. "If we can do " only one job at a time, we're in trouble because we can't make our customers wait. That's a good way to lose business. "

with a hydro-seeder and just three employees, counting himself. "This is a specialty business, but there was room for another contractor when we " started, he recalls. The company quickly landed contracts, and an emphasis on customer satisfaction earned plenty of repeat business -- which led the company to a crossroads. "By 2006, we had to decide if we were going to be just a small contractor or if we would ramp up to be able to take care of the needs of all of our customers who were coming back to us with more work, Woods recalls. " He chose to add employees and acquire more equipment to satisfy all of the customers who were coming back to Con-Site Services.
