Chill out in North Dakota.
Whether you prefer to swoosh down the slopes, glide across the snow on cross-country skis or skate and snowmobile your way across our wide-open horizons, you'll find our winters are action-packed. Check out our most popular areas: the scenic Pembina Gorge, the forested hills of the Turtle Mountains, and the vast plains across the state. Snow and trail conditions are updated weekly at NDtourism.com or by contacting ND Parks and Rec at 701-328-5357, www.parkrec.nd.gov/ recreation/snowmobile.index.html or www.snommobilend.org.
Snowmobiling Are 3,900 miles of snowmobile trails enough to rev up your engine? Our 17 groomed and ungroomed trails open Dec. 1, as long as there is 4" of snow cover, and close April 1. The Lake Metigoshe/Peace Garden Trail opens Dec. 15. Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing You'll find novice and advanced cross-country ski trails at Cross Ranch, Turtle River and Lake Metigoshe state parks, as well as Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. Snowshoe enthusiasts, while not allowed on groomed cross-country ski trails, can blaze their own trails through undisturbed snow. Ice Fishing Drop a line into our many lakes and rivers, where yellow perch, northern pike, and walleye await year round. Ice fishing for perch is especially popular at Devils Lake as well as Icelandic and Lake Metigoshe state parks, and on Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon.
